The Korean People’s Army (KPA) has launched an intensive specialized command exercise for its electronic warfare units, coinciding with the start of the army’s summer training, Daily NK has learned.

The drill, overseen by the Combat Training Bureau of the KPA’s General Staff Department, aims to elevate the professional skills of specialist troops and refine command strategies, ultimately bolstering the army’s electronic warfare capacity for potential emergencies. This move suggests a concerted effort by the KPA to maximize combat power and ensure tactical flexibility within its electronic warfare units.

While the exercise encompasses the entire military, the primary focus is on five specially designated electronic warfare units. These army units are conducting drills at a dedicated training ground on the outskirts of Pyongyang and at major bases across the country.

“On July 1, when the summer exercises commenced, five electronic warfare units, including one from a Nampo-based combined arms unit, assembled at the Pyongyang training ground,” the source said. “They were briefed on the month-long exercise schedule and its objectives.”

The comprehensive training program, running throughout July, is structured as follows:

  • July 2-7: Basic electronic warfare techniques, including:
    • Jamming enemy communication networks
    • Detection and disruption tactics
    • Hacking and cyber defense
    • Real-time reconnaissance using advanced drones
  • July 8-14: Wargames focused on paralyzing enemy command systems through:
    • Communication disruption
    • Radar interference
    • Electronic system attacks
    • The General Staff Department will conduct immediate evaluations, analyzing problems and formulating improvement strategies
  • July 15-21: General electronic warfare training, emphasizing:
    • Real-time information sharing
    • Tactical cooperation between electronic warfare personnel, mechanized units, air force, and navy assets
    • Night-time reconnaissance and jamming drills to enhance night-time operational capacity
  • July 22-30: The Combat Training Bureau will conduct comprehensive evaluations and tactical training, including:
    • Large-scale simulation exercises
    • Analysis of each unit’s performance
    • Additional drills to address identified weaknesses
  • July 31: The Combat Training Bureau will wrap up the training by:
    • Announcing the final report on the drills and performance results for each unit
    • Commending outstanding units
    • Discussing future development and practice plans

“This specialized command drill aims to significantly elevate the army’s electronic warfare capabilities and secure tactical flexibility across various combat scenarios,” the source said. “The General Staff Department anticipates substantial strengthening of the army’s practical electronic warfare prowess through this exercise.”
