Daily NK is one of the few news organizations in the world with sources operating inside North Korea. Based in Seoul, South Korea, we report on the lives of ordinary North Koreans — their struggles, their resilience, and the realities of daily life under one of the world’s most repressive regimes. We deliver news that the regime works hard to suppress.

We are part of the Unification Media Group (UMG), a consortium dedicated to getting independent information into North Korea through news reporting, radio broadcasts, and video content produced specifically for North Korean audiences. In a country where access to outside information is a criminal offense, that work carries real risk — for our sources, and for the people inside North Korea who seek out our content.

Why It Matters

North Korea controls virtually every aspect of information available to its citizens. State media exists solely to serve the regime. Independent reporting from inside the country is rare, dangerous, and essential. Daily NK has been doing this work since 2004, building a network of sources who report at personal risk so that the outside world — and North Koreans themselves — can know the truth.

Our work is funded through grants from South Korea and abroad, but reader support is essential to keeping our journalism going. Every contribution helps us do more of what we do: report the truth about North Korea.
