When I left my hometown, I thought ‘living would be more difficult than dying. Surviving in China was not as easy as I expected. However, fortunately I came to Korea, and now I think I should work as much hard as others.
This summer, I applied for some universities and had a few interviews to study more. The good news of the admission was not publicized yet. Yet I am not nervous or unstable because I can have another opportunity next time.
Applying for universities reminded me of the process of applying in North Korea.
Like South Korea, in North Korea high school students usually take a test for university after the graduation from high schools. The test subjects are Politics, Kim Il Sung Revolution History, Kim Jong Il Revolution Activities. Math, English, Physics and Chemistry and its passing mark is 70.
In principle, every high school student can apply for the universities they want to go to, yet the reality is that only 1 or 2 out of 100 applicants can go to the universities they want to go to.
However hard they may study, they of low birth could not imagine even to go to the best universities like Kim Il Sung University.
Study is fundamentally related to birth class? No. Regardless of the birth class, the role of students who are enthusiastic about study is to study hard to be elites to contribute to their countries and their countries also get great helps from the elites. However, North Korea considers the birth class most important for further study.
In North Korea birth class is the most significant criterion to select university students
This is the story of one of my school seniors.
This school senior so-called a genius was brilliant, and always won the first prize at his school.
Other students always told him “If you do not go to university, then nobody can go”. I also thought he would go to Kim Il Sung University or Kim Chaek Industry University.
After the graduation, he took a college admission test. On the test day, he was more energetic than others, and looked confident. His family and neighbors also expected his test to pass.
However, unfortunately he could not find out his name on the list of the result announcement day. After spending a few weeks without knowing why he was not admitted, he happened to know about the reason.
It was because his grandfather was a member of a defector family to the South during the Korea War period. In a word, he could not go to the university because of his low birth class. The test authority filled in the name of a party officer’s son in his answer sheet, instead of his name.
He was so angry that he went to the university and protested the wrong action of the test authority. Yet, he was only told that, “Do you want to resist what the Party wants? Absolutely it is telling that low bird class produces base offspring.”
After hearing about it, he did violence to the staff of the university authority, and was sentenced to one year and a half. Finally he went to an edification camp instead of the university.
Like South Korea, Russia is not a good birth origin. Then Kim Jong Il is also of base, low birth origin. Kim Jong Il has told a lie that he was born in a secret base camp of Baekdu Mountain. Yet everybody knows what the truth is. He was born in Russia.
As the proverb ‘a wrongdoer thinks everyone speaks of it’ says, it seems that because Kim Jong Il is not of North Korean origin, he cares about the origin of others more.
I hope that the time when brilliant people are grown and work as elites comes soon. In addition, I wish that regardless of their birth classes, all North Koreans could have opportunities to work at the places they want to, and are paid as much as their abilities.
