The [South Korean] Governmental Investigation Team Captain Hwang Boo Gi said on the 25th, “The apparent location of the shooting of Park Wang Ja differs by 100 meters from the North’s most recent explanation.”
Hwang was speaking at the announcement of interim investigation results which took place at the Central Government Building. He continued, “The location of the shooting was estimated to be approximately 200 meters directly from the perimeter of the Mt. Geumgang Beach in the direction of Gisang Rocks.
He also said, “This was discovered after the National Institute of Scientific Investigation (NISI)’s precise analysis of several photos of the shooting site and an examination of the photos of the body taken by Hyundai Asan. The 100-meter gap differs from the distance reported by North Korea to Hyundai Asan CEO Yoon Man Joon at the time of his visit to the North.
North Korea stated to Hyundai Asan on the day of the incident that Park was shot approximately 200 meters from the perimeter of Mt. Geumgang Beach, but afterwards, during CEO Yoon’s visit, it was maintained that the distance was around 300 meters.
Moreover, Hwang spoke regarding the number of shots fired by the North Korean infantryman, that “The North said to Hyundai Asan that a warning shot and three shots had been fired, but many tourists who were present at the time reported different observations, so the number of actual shots that were fired and the time of shooting need to be investigated further.”
As for the estimated time of death, Hwang said, “It was confirmed through testimonies of observers and photo analysis results that the time of shooting was around 5:16 in the morning.” However, CEO Yoon reported that Park died between 4:55 and 5 A.M. according to the announced of the North.
Regarding stories of the 17-year old female soldier who may or may not have shot Park which were reported by some media sources, Hwang noted that “Nothing has been confirmed at this stage.”
The joint investigation team also stated that after analyzing the results of the CCTV footage at the resort where Park had been staying that she had stepped out of her room at 4:18 A.M. on the 11th.
“The most critical element is to investigate the scene of the incident,” noted Hwang, urging an agreement by the North for a site visit.
