A woman living in Huchang County, Ryanggang Province, was recently sentenced to life in prison for murdering her husband with the help of her boyfriend, Daily NK learned recently.
“A female doctor in her 40s who worked at a hospital in Huchang County was sentenced to life in prison for killing her husband in mid-May. She had help from her boyfriend, who was a border guard,” a Ryanggang Province-based source told Daily NK on June 5.
The stress of constantly fighting with her husband led her to commit the murder, the source speculated.
Her husband was already known for his heavy drinking habits, bad drunk behavior, and even for secretly selling household appliances to buy more alcohol. During their 20-odd-year marriage, he was known locally for failing to take care of his family.
The woman had already been trying to divorce her husband for a long time, but he never agreed and would become violent if she brought up the subject – even threatening to kill her.
On the eve of the murder, the woman’s husband sold some of the food at home to a business person and used the money to buy alcohol. When the wife noticed and raised an issue, he told her he was “sick of her nagging” and brought an ax to the hospital she worked, causing a “commotion.”
In the end, the woman could no longer contain her anger and decided to kill her husband with the help of her boyfriend. The two put a sleeping pill in her husband’s drink and, after he had passed out, choked him to death.
Although they intended to make it look like her husband had died after drinking too much, the man’s family was suspicious and demanded an autopsy. The autopsy revealed that he had been strangled to death. The woman and her boyfriend were both arrested.
“The woman was given a life sentence in mid-May and taken to the Kaechon Prison Camp after a preliminary examination was held quickly over a period of two weeks,” the source said.
Preliminary examinations include the entire interrogation process prior to suspects being indicted.
Meanwhile, her boyfriend was reportedly sentenced to 15 years in prison and sent to a prison in Hamhung.
When his family found out about his arrest, however, they went to the Huchang County police station to protest his confinement. They are currently being interrogated by the Ministry of State Security office in Huchang County for the crime of “challenging” a judicial agency.
