North Korean Unification Strategy is Estrangement Policy

Hwang Jang Yop, President of Committee for Democratization of North Korea, suggests and predicts that “It is no exaggeration to say that the original blueprint for Kim Jong Il’s dictatorship is Mao Zedong’s. Just as Mao Zedong’s dictatorship fell, so Kim Jong Il’s will fall as well.”

In a recent interview with Free North Korea Broadcasting, President Hwang continued, “Mao Zedong and Kim Il Sung were followed by Kim Jong Il, who has continued with the totalitarian dictatorship.”

He pointed out that “North Korea’s unification strategy is an ‘estrangement policy.’ They seek to cause estrangement between the U.S. and South Korea, Japan and South Korea, and the rich and the poor through this ‘unification strategy,’ saying the U.S. is an imperialist power and South Korea is an American colony.”

He added that “Lying is a habit with North Korea; people from democratic countries should not believe those lies.”

He also reiterated his opinion about the recent candlelight demonstrations against U.S. meat importation, saying that “[Pro-North Korea radicals] led candlelight demonstrations while South Korea negotiated the FTA and strengthened the South Korea-U.S. alliance. I wish the leaders of those demonstrations could be sent to North Korea to make them experience Kim Jong Il’s reign.”

Also, “I thought I had to topple the Kim Jong Il regime as soon as possible, when I arrived here. But now I think it is more important to strengthen South Korea’s democracy and democratic awareness, and to let our people know as much as possible about North Korea by displaying the true circumstances in the country.”

He also heavily criticized the Sunshine Policy of previous administrations, saying, “Some people say the Sunshine Policy is reasonable, but giving money to an individual, Kim Jong Il, without even telling the South Korean people, keeping distant from the U.S., South Korea’s closest ally, and saying ‘We are friendly with our brothers!’ is the Sunshine Policy.”
