North Korea implemented strict social distancing measures for Chongmyong, a traditional holiday celebrated on Apr. 4, Daily NK sources in Ryanggang Province reported.
Celebrated to welcome the spring, Chongmyong (meaning “clear and bright” spring weather) became a public holiday in 2014.
On the holiday, North Koreans generally visit the graves of their ancestors, sweep and clean the graves, and conduct simple memorial ceremonies. Families also gather together to enjoy meals of steamed rice cakes or seasonal vegetables.
Daily NK sources revealed on Apr. 5 that locals in Ryanggang Province were ordered not to conduct ancestral rites or host family gatherings on the holiday.
Families with elderly members or young children were especially forbidden from participating in such gatherings, sources said.
Local security officers and inminban leaders reportedly conducted checks of people’s houses to ensure compliance with the measures.
