[imText1]Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea urged the National Assembly to enact a special law to save the lives of abductees and aid their families at the general meeting on the 28th.
Family Assembly claimed that “the special law concerning the abductees is still pending in the National Assembly. The assembly members should quickly pass the law for abductees and their families.”
The pending law to verify life and death of abductees, repatriate and aid the families was introduced into the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly in July, 2006.
Kim Bong Ok, a brother of Kim Bong Joo who was abducted in 1969, noted the contempt with which abductees had been treated by the South Korean government. In its view, these kidnapped were defectors, not victims.
Other family members complained that the government has an obligation to determine the status of the abducted families and has not done so.
Authorities who participated in the meeting said “9 legal experts are establishing concrete enforcement ordinances.”
