Last April, North Korean citizens living in Shinuiju attacked a security guard in an outburst against severe corruption that had been occurring in the region.

On April 23rd, the DailyNK reported the case that two men in their 30s made assault. A security guard was stabbed with a weapon and shot 7 times with a pistol.

In a telephone conversation with the DailyNK on the 5th, a source informed, “The attacked security guard ‘Lee’ was known as one of the worst people around” and said, “Lee used to confiscate money and goods off the people and practiced all kinds of corruption.”

The source added, “Basically, people who trade at the markets avoid security guards when they see them. But Lee had a bad reputation because he always demanded bribes and kept confiscating goods off the people.”

Further, the source relayed, “A few days ago, there was a commotion that Lee had a run-in with a couple of merchants because he had extorted some goods off them” and “The people think that he was attacked because he expected too much, more than others.”

On the night of the assault, Lee was stabbed while returning home late at night and luckily survived the source said.

Following Lee’s testimony, North Korean authorities rounded up Social Safety Agencies and National Security Agencies in the regions of Shinuiju and North Pyongan in search for the offender. However, investigations have been closed though it has only been 10 days since the assault and the offender not even found.

The source explained that the offender had disappeared the moment the order was made to search the whole area after leaving the weapon and gun in front of the main door of Shinuiju Workers’ Party’s building and that “In relation to Kim Jong Il’s security, authorities don’t pay much attention once a gun or weapon is returned.”

The interesting thing is that Number 1 Events in which Kim Jong Il attends do not take place in areas where a gun has been seized.

“Following this assault, security guards seem tense as they are worried another attack is made” informed the source.
