On March 18th, a production company, Camp B, released to the press a glimpse of “Crossing,” a movie based on the 2002 incident in which North Korean defectors staying in Beijing penetrated the Spanish Embassy.
Produced by Director Kim Tae Gyun and starring Cha In Pyo, “Crossing” was filmed in covert locations throughout Korea, China and Mongolia.
The first Korean movie to deal with the plight of North Korean defectors, its production attracted many prominent film talents to vividly depict events leading up to defection and the process of border-crossing. The events that inspired the film’s production took place in March 2002, when 25 North Korean defectors succeeded in pushing past Chinese guards posted in front of the Spanish Embassy in Beijing.
The Jang Gil Soo family’s successful entry into the UN building in June 2001 became a landmark event that accelerated the planning of the defectors’ escape from North Korea.
