Nuclear Site Shows Signs of Damage

North Korea’s nuclear test area in Kilju County, North Hamkyung Province suffered damage in recent bad weather, according to the South Korean government.

A Seoul official commented this morning, “One of two newly dug tunnels in Pungye-ri appears to have been damaged by the recent flooding and typhoons.”

However, the official cautioned, “There is still one tunnel left, so it is not a case of their being unable to conduct a test should they wish to.”

The government believes based on satellite images that there are four tunnels on the Pungye-ri site; two that were used for previous nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 and two newer ones that have never been used.
