The second North Korea Human Rights Film
Festival will be held at City University of Hong Kong from August 22nd to the
24th. Jointly hosted by North Korean Defectors Concern, Amnesty International
Hong Kong, and the North Korea Strategy Center, the event aims to increase
awareness about human rights issues in North Korea and problems faced by North
Korean defectors to the citizens of Hong Kong.

Lau Kwun Hang told Daily NK on August 8th, “The response last year was quite good and it drew some media
attention on our guests. Therefore, we think the film festival is good for Hong
Kong citizens to learn of the human rights conditions in North Korea. It is a
‘soft’ approach to appeal to people. That’s why we continue to organize this
event.”
The three day event plans to feature three
films: The Apostle, The Defectors: Escape from North Korea and Camp 14: Total
Control Zone. Two additional sharing sessions are scheduled to give attendees
the opportunity to hear defectors speak about the realities inside the
political prison camps, escaping North Korea, and life after forced
repatriation.
“We hope more people will become aware of
and better help the human rights conditions in North Korea as well as urge the
Chinese government not to repatriate North Korean defectors,” Mr. Hang
explained.
Over 200 people are expected daily for the
duration of the event. Mr. Hang hopes the festival will inspire “ participants to spread the message [of human rights in North Korea] to their
friends and families.”
The event is free of charge with seating
available on a first-come first served basis. The venue is located at the
following address: Ting Ka Ping Lecture Theater[LT1], Level 4, Academic
Building 1, City University of Hong Kong.
