End of Rains Not End of Trouble

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has cautioned that last month’s flooding in North Korea could have a prolonged effect on food security in the country.

An information bulletin published by IFRC on August 1st explained that continuous heavy rains between July 12th and 22nd left many areas of North Korea experiencing floods and landslides.

As a result, some early crops died, and reserve food stocks in some locations were washed away by flooding. Elsewhere, there was damage to 13,340ha of farmland. Due to flooding in corn and rice-growing areas, a number of irrigation canals and levees were also damaged.

The end of summer rains has not ended the trouble, IFRC warned. The organization predicts that flood damage will have a not inconsiderable impact on livelihoods and food security going forward, in particular the process of securing safe water supplies.
