A drunk man in Yanggang Province was allegedly knifed to death by a university student outside a Hyesan restaurant on the afternoon of Kim Jong Il’s 80th birthday, Daily NK has learned.

A source in the province told Daily NK on Feb. 22 that the murder occurred at Hyesan’s Nammun Restaurant at around 2 PM on Feb. 16.

The 21-year-old murder suspect, surnamed Kim, is a third-year student at the Hyesan University of Agriculture and Forestry. After laying his flower wreath in honor of Kim Jong Il’s birthday, he went to Nammun Restaurant in the city’s Hyegang District to have lunch with his girlfriend.

They had just finished up their lunch at the restaurant when a drunk man in his 30s ran into them on their way out, which led to an argument between the two sides.

The argument then escalated into a physical fight. Kim allegedly took out a concealed knife and stabbed the drunk man several times in the abdomen. Locals who witnessed the scene reported what they saw to the local police station.

Police then arrested Kim at the scene. Meanwhile, the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

The alleged murderer has been imprisoned in the city’s Ministry of Social Security detention center and is currently being investigated. Because the murder occurred on Kim Jong Il’s birthday, the alleged perpetrator will most likely face severe punishment, the source said.
