UPP Rejects Search Demand

Seoul prosecutors attempted to conduct a search of the headquarters of the United Progressive Party early this morning.

However, party members rejected the warrant presented to them at the building in Daebang, Seoul. Meeting with reporters at the entrance to the building at the time, party emergency committee chair Kang Ki Kap declared, “Currently the search and seizure is not going ahead, and this illegal election is an issue that needs to be solved within the UPP; it is not a problem that prosecutors should get involved with.”

Kang went on, “Conducting a search based on one accusation from an external organization is a violation of the rights of political parties as guaranteed under the constitution. Party membership and election lists, the heart of the party, are among the things the prosecutors are trying to confiscate, so they are trying to expose information about the heart of the party, its members.”

The group which submitted the indictment against the UPP and inspired the search was the extreme right wing NGO ‘Light Korea’.
