North Korea succession is among the most consequential and closely watched questions in Northeast Asian security. Who will lead the DPRK after Kim Jong Un — and how power will transfer — has profound implications for regional stability, denuclearization prospects, and the fate of ordinary North Koreans. Daily NK covers North Korea succession through reports on Kim Jong Un’s health and public appearances, the emergence of his daughter Kim Ju Ae as a potential heir, the role of Kim Yo Jong as the regime’s second most powerful figure, and historical precedents from the Kim Il Sung to Kim Jong Il transition. Our in-country sources and regional analysts provide insight into elite politics and the internal dynamics shaping the dynasty’s future.
