Students Speak Out on Wangjaesan

University groups aligned with North Korean human rights causes have called for a thorough investigation of all relevant authorities pursuant to the ‘Wangjaesan’ scandal, in which a number of people have been charged with espionage activities.

Members from various student groups including The Youth Forum, North Korean Youth for North Korea Human Rights and Students Alliance for Human Rights in North Korea declared in a joint statement yesterday, “We feel outraged that the people involved in the Wangjaesan case remain silent on the dictatorial regime in North Korea and yet sought to create a North Korean-style socialist revolution in this country.”

They further declared that the surprisingly active extreme left in South Korea needs to come out from its role as the right hand man of Kim Jong Il, saying, “Those who took orders from the dictatorial regime of Kim Jong Il to create chaos in South Korea and bring about a socialist revolution have operated in the highest echelons of Korean politics.”

Therefore, the statement stressed the need for a “sustained effort at the national level to confront reality and deal with issues of national security.”

The groups also had a personal message for the opposition Democratic Labor Party, which has branded the handling of the Wangjaesan case repressive.

“The dictatorial regime the DLP loathes so much is in North Korea. More precisely, it is the regime of Kim Jong Il. The target of their criticism should not be the government and the investigators, but rather those responsible for the case itself; those who were taking their instructions from Kim Jong Il and his regime and acting secretly behind the scenes,” according to the statement.
