S. Korean FM backs discussions on N. Korean missiles at U.N.

SEOUL, July 5 (Yonhap) — South Korean Foreign Minister said Wednesday that North Korea’s missiles pose a serious threat to the international community, especially since they can carry nuclear weapons.

Ban Ki-moon also said his country would have no problem discussing the North’s latest missile test launches at the United Nations Security Council, pointing out they run counter to the global efforts to curb the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

“The North’s missile launch is a serious threat in that it is part of the development of a tool to transport weapons of mass destruction, not just from the perspective of international law,” Ban told reporters at a press briefing.

He also reaffirmed Seoul’s announcement that North Korea fired one long-range Taepodong-2 missile, along with five Scud and Rodong missiles early Wednesday morning, all of which fell harmlessly into the East Sea.
