Preparations for the Day of the Sun

[imText1]Shenyang, China — A Daily NK source has captured footage of more than 200 trucks entering North Korea across the International Friendship Bridge at Sinuiju on April 14th, the day before the celebration of the anniversary of Kim Il Sung’s birth on the 15th.

The four minutes of footage of the trucks heading in the direction of the North was received by The Daily NK this morning.

According to the source, “The scene of more than 200 lorries crossing the Yalu River nose-to-tail is not a spectacle that can be easily seen on a normal day. It should be taken to be the entry of birthday gifts made ready in China in advance of the birthday.”

“The loading of high-priced electronic goods such as big-screen TVs at Hualian Warehouse in Dandong was also witnessed,” the source went on, implying that the trucks may have contained the sort of gifts that Kim Jong Il is known to use to foster loyalty among elite Party cadres.

Almost all goods which are exported through Dandong to Sinuiju are stored in the same place, Hualian Warehouse, before being loaded onto trucks for the short trip across the Yalu. The area surrounding the warehouse, in the vicinity of Dandong Station, is where the majority of sellers of North Korean goods are also concentrated.
