One Week Spent Waiting for a Reply

In a statement made on the 4th, the South Korean government again urged North Korea to approach the Kaesong Industrial Complex issue with greater sincerity.

Kim Hyong Seok, a spokesman for the Ministry of Unification, commented, “The government is trying hard to reduce the colossal damage to our businesses that is increasing day-by-day. Essentially, this problem was caused by the unilateral actions of the North Korean side.”

Kim went on, “The government’s position is firm: that we should develop the KIC as per international standards,” adding, “However, if anxiety persists because we are not sure whether the North will once more suddenly shut down the KIC for political or military reasons, then ultimately businesses will have no choice but to leave the complex.”

“The North Korean side ought to keep in mind that the patience of our citizens is reaching its limit. They want a more sincere attitude than North Korea’s current one,” he added. “They ought to show this through actions and responsible words, not silence.”

North Korea has not responded to South Korea’s call for “final talks”. The original proposal was made by the Ministry of Unification a week ago.
