China’s Vice President Li Yuanchao will attend events in Pyongyang to mark the 60th anniversary of the July 27th armistice that ended Korean War, Chosun Central News Agency (KCNA) has confirmed.
In a report released on the 24th, KCNA noted, “A Chinese delegation headed by Chinese Communist Party Politburo member and Vice President Li Yuanchao is to pay an official visit to North Korea.” The visit, the precise schedule for which was not released, has been organized by the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly, North Korea’s nominal legislative assembly.
Li was promoted to Vice President in March this year, and is considered to be the number eight figure in the opaque Chinese leadership structure.
North Korea regards July 27th as the date of its victory in the Korean War, and celebrates the day as such.
