A prison guard at the Kaechon prison camp was fired after engaging in sexual relations with a female inmate, Daily NK has learned.

“The prison guard was discovered having improper sexual relations with the inmate, who is in her 30s, amid restrictions on family visits and intense disease control efforts at the prison,” a South Pyongan Province-based source told Daily NK on Apr. 7.

The prison guard had worked at the prison, which is located in South Pyongan Province, for over a decade and his relationship with the female prisoner began in late 2019.

The female inmate had been arrested for her involvement in smuggling activities near Hyesan, Ryanggang Province, sources said.

“She’s beautiful and gave bribes to the prison guard overseeing her in exchange for getting out of forced labor. The bribing then turned into a romantic relationship,” another source in the province confirmed.

Knowing she had gained “protection” from the prison guard, the female inmate reportedly acted tyrannically toward other inmates during the course of her six month courtship with the guard.

Other inmates reported the relationship to prison authorities and an investigation was conducted, but it ultimately led nowhere. Reports about their relationship continued to surface, however, and prison authorities began to monitor the two, eventually catching them in the act.

The female inmate was reportedly sitting on the lap of the prison guard in fancy lingerie when the arresting officers burst into a guard house.

The two were charged with the serious crime of “disturbing disease control procedures” and the prison guard was fired last month, sources said.

Daily NK was unable to confirm the punishment, if any, given to the female inmate.
