Changchun, China — The National Security Agency has decided to severely punish those users of Chinese cellular phones in border cities near the Tumen River who fail to report their illegal cellular phones, a source inside the country reports.
The source from North Hamkyung Province told The Daily NK on Monday, “Since last week, there have been lectures about illegally crossing the river and illegal cell phone usage around border cities in this province. Officials emphasized the severe punishment of illegal cell phone users.”
In the lectures, which were held in every work place and People’s Unit, NSA officials pointed out, “There are currently traitors who show a total disregard for the state and national dignity and sell state and Party secrets to enemies for the sake of a few coins.”
“The core of the problem is illegal cell phone users. They should surrender themselves to the justice of the authorities, and then they can be forgiven. Otherwise, if they are caught, they will be harshly punished as traitors.”
According to clause 67 of the revised 2007 North Korean penal code covering “Treason,” those who commit treasonable acts against the nation by selling national secrets to imperialists are sentenced to more than ten years in a reeducation camp. If serious, they can be given a life sentence or even executed.
According to the source, one such NSA lecturer pointed out, “On February 13, one Kim from Musan was caught with a Korean-Chinese accomplice trying to sell documents to the enemy and sentenced under the law. There were also spies in Yuseon (a district of Hoiryeong) revealed.”
The source also reported, “Lately along the Tumen River, Worker and Peasant Red Guards and community watch guards as well as border guards, the NSA and the People’s Safety Agency have been patrolling. They are using radars imported from Germany to detect cell phone signals.”
