3 Arrested on Rebellion Conspiracy Charges

Three people have been arrested in connection with this morning’s searches of offices belonging to leftwing Unified Progressive Party officials.

The three are the vice-chair of the Gyeonggi Province branch of the party, Hong Soon Seok, advisor to the Gyeonggi Progressives Alliance, Lee Sang Ho, and former Suwon City Council Chairperson Han Dong Geun. Agents are still searching the offices of lawmaker Lee Seok Ki.

An official from the security forces explained, “The NIS obtained a warrant to detain these three people, and has exercised it. If it goes as planned, an arrest warrant will be filed on or around the 29th.” An arrest warrant was not issued for Lee Seok Ki, who is a serving lawmaker.

Speaking about the searches, Choi Tae Won, a senior prosecutor with Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office explained, “(The UPP officials) are charged with conspiracy to commit a rebellion and violating the National Security Law.” No further details have been released.
