Sohn Signals Look Back to Sunshine

“The Democratic Party is urging a change of government to build a new society,” Democratic Party head Sohn Hak Kyu told reporters in a press conference to commemorate yesterday’s Independence Day.

“We are asking for a resumption of inter-Korean talks including an inter-Korean summit. And we’re going to build a Korean community through the Sunshine Policy and inter-Korean reconciliation and cooperation policy that President Kim Dae Jung began,” he went on, adding, “We need to recover the inter-Korean peace and secure a peace system.”

“We need to find a way that benefits both Koreas by strengthening economic cooperation as well as promoting inter-Korean exchanges and humanitarian aid,” Sohn further added.

This, he concluded, is the basis of the Democratic Party platform for inter-Korean relations.

Sohn also added that the Democratic Party is keen to consolidate the political left in the name of trying to overturn the conservative administration. For a change of government, he said, “we will consolidate the opposition parties, the democratic progressive parties,” stating that “to achieve this, the Democratic Party will pursue innovation, and lead the consolidation in a manner of sacrifice and devotion.”
