11 in Shenyang Facing Return

A group of eleven North Korean refugees arrested by local security forces in Shenyang, China on February 8th seem set to be repatriated despite concerted efforts to rescue them.

An individual with the Chinese security forces commented the day after the 11 were detained last week, “Last night at approximately 6PM, public security guards raided the hiding place of the refugees and arrested them. Municipal public security forces are talking to them now.”

The source added, “Last year there were orders to strengthen efforts to track down refugees, and this is being constantly enhanced. Public security officers are keen to find the refugees for the sake of their work performance.”

Daily NK kept the story under wraps immediately following the arrests while efforts were underway in China to earn their release. But there has been no movement from the Chinese side, leading to the decision to publish.

Additional details of the 11 are expected to emerge following the culmination of the municipal investigation.
