Korean-Canadian Kim Jae Yul Was Detained in North Korea

[imText1]The family members and the Canadian Embassy in South Korea have urged the release of a forcibly detained Korean-Canadian who has been volunteering in the Najin and Sunbong regions of North Korea for 10 years.

The Canadian daily –Toronto Star–introduced the person detained in North Korea as a Korean-Canadian pastor and dentist Kim Jae Yul. However, it is not specifically clear what kind of an accusation he has received.

The newspaper relayed that activists who have traveled to the region where Kim has worked said that the North Korean authorities investigated Kim’s notes and read the content of his sermon which he had prepared.

The Canadian Embassy in South Korea, in a phone conversation with DailyNK on the 24th, said, “The diplomat in charge of the Canadian Consulate visited Kim twice in North Korea and has been in regular contact with Kim’s family members. Due the risk to the person in question and according to the Privacy Act, we cannot reveal anymore.”

Ted Lipman, the Canadian Ambassador stationed in Seoul who has been in Pyongyang since the 20th, was unwilling to give a statement when asked whether he has been negotiating Kim’s release with the North Korean authorities.

The Toronto Star reported, “Last September, two months before Kim’s detention, Pyongyang announced the arrests of North Koreans accused of espionage in the service of an unspecified country, a clear sign that government suspicion and vigilance remain hallmarks of the North Korean state.”

Kim’s son-in-law Jin Jong said, “I understand the newsworthiness of this story on a broader scale. But we’re trying to control the situation.
