[imText1]There is much debate over the issue of whether HEU (Highly Enriched Uranium) will be adopted by the six party talks’ Feb 13th Agreement. In relation to this, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) revealed that South Korean government was aware that a HEU program was existent in North Korea.
At an unofficial meeting on the afternoon of Feb 20th, committee members claimed that an official of NIS responded to the question “Does a HEU program exist in North Korea?” by saying “I am aware it does.”
Arising from the U.S., many argue that North Korea has been advancing its skills by importing centrifugal separators from Pakistan’s nuclear developments technology. However, North Korean authorities have publicly declared “We do not have a HEU program.”
NIS said “The HEU issue relating to the nuclear program has been omitted from the Feb 13th Agreement.”
Regarding this, an officer of NIS explained “In relation to HEU, the probability is fundamentally high; it is merely said in principle.”
Further, he said “Even at the six party talks, there was talk over the existence of HEU” and “It seems that an agreement will be made in relation to HEU even at the Korea-U.S. Summit.”
On the previous day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade revealed “The HEU program will undoubtedly be included on the implementation process of the six party talks, Feb 13th Agreement.”
Referring to a press release, NIS said “Following the measures taken in 2005 Sept by the U.S. regarding BDA, systems were proposed to set financial transactions on an international level and to prevent further incidences of money laundering” and revealed “It has been confirmed that North Korea adapted “Money Laundering Control Law” by a standing committee of Supreme People’s Assembly last October.
