Kaesong RFID Implemented on Trial Basis

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) has been successfully implemented on a trial basis at the Kaesong Industrial Complex, South Korea’s Ministry of Unification reported today.

It is hoped the system will limit disruption to those personnel entering and exiting the complex on a regular basis.
The ministry also announced its plans to negotiate with the North a suitable time to roll out the service across the board.

The RFID system connects the southern Gyeonghui Rail Line with the Northern immigration office, and processes data on who is coming in and out of the complex.
A full adoption of the system would allow South Korean personnel the freedom to come and go as they please on their scheduled work day. The previous system only permitted entry and exit within a fixed time frame agreed upon in advance.

Meanwhile, negotiations to simplify the customs process are currently underway.
Additional working-level talks to solve ongoing issues with communications, including the introduction of the internet at the complex, are set to take place on February 7th.
