UN to Give $920,000 in Flood Aid

The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has decided to provide $920,000 in flood damage aid to North Korea, according to a September 13th report carried by Voice of America. The World Health Organization (WHO) will deliver the aid in the form of medicines and food.

On July 18th, the UN pledged to provide $600,000 to North Korea through the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). On July 23rd, in response to North Korea’s appeal for emergency flood aid, a UN inspection team comprised of organizations such as the United Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) visited flooded areas of the country to inspect the damage.

The inspection team raised concerns over inadequate medical aid, and that waterborne diseases could spread. It recommended delivery of approximately $5.8million in flood aid.

Previously, the UN provided 38,067 North Korean flood victims with a one-month supply of corn in August via the World Food Programme (WFP).
