Japanese Food Aid Sold in North Korea

“Donated by the Government of Japan”
“From the People of Japan”

Grain Sacks with letters written in Korean and English (Country of Origin Pakistan, 50kg rice sacks). The blue WFP logo and Japanese flag are printed, which clearly states that the food was donated by the government of Japan. In the below of the sack, the date of production is printed, October 2004. This is the food sent from Japan as the result of the promised “humanitarian aid” of Koizumi to Kim Jong Il in May 2004, and 125,000 tons was sent.

The food the government of Japan sent to North Korea through WFP is being sold in the markets in North Korea openly. The food aid is not reaching those starving but is sold to the people who can pay money and those who buy the food illegally are reselling them in the markets. This is a clear evidence that a group of people in North Korea are making profit in the cost of lives of the North Korean people.

The video clip contains scenes of April 24, Namheung Market located in Anju of South Pyongan province.
