Demonstration Held Against Silent Chongryon

[imText1]Tokyo — The Korean Residents Union in Japan and NGOs campaigning for the resolution of the abductions issue held a demonstration against Chongryon (General Association of North Korean Residents in Japan) and other pro-North Korean regime organizations on the 16th in Tokyo.

The event was held in response to the “Korean overseas residents’ campaign to implement the June 15 Joint Declaration and October 4 Inter-Korean Summit Agreement,” which was being held by Chongryon the same day. The assembled opposition groups organized their demonstration on the street in front of the Education Center where the Chongryon event was underway.

North Korean human rights advocacy organizations, abduction organizations and other related organizations based in Tokyo took part in the demonstration, raising their voices for the resumption of the Six-Party Talks, the repatriation of abductees and the invalidation of the June 15 Joint Declaration.

The main participant organizations were the National Association for the Rescue of Japanese Kidnapped by North Korea, Life Funds for North Korean Refugees, NO FENCE, and Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea, Society to Help Returnees to North Korea, and the Korean Residents Union in Japan.

They heavily attacked Chongryon in an accompanying press release, “Many countries are making efforts to solve the Japanese abduction issue, defectors issue and other human rights issues,” it read, “But, people like Chongryon are holding their tongues about these issues.”

The 200 participants held a silent demonstration holding placards upon which many things were written, including, “Repatriate all abduction victims!” “Dismantle Political Prison Camps!” and “Send Japanese Spouses Home!”
