South Korea-China FTA Could Kill Alliance

The President of the Committee for Democratization of North Korea, Hwang Jang Yop stated on Monday, “Defectors have to isolate Kim Jong Il by mounting ideological attacks against his regime using the human rights issue.”

Hwang, speaking on a Free North Korea Broadcasting (Free NK) program, went on, “Objecting to nuclear weapons and war and struggling for peace pertain also to the human rights movement.”

Hwang emphasized, “Offering refugee status to those who defect from North Korea has been mentioned, but this is a subordinate issue which stems from anti-violence movements. If both South Korea and the U.S.’ social orders are against violence, we can overcome Kim Jong Il.”

“China repatriates defectors to North Korea only due to their traditional relationship, but at their heart they do not want to do it.” Therefore, he stressed, “We have to concentrate on promoting friendship with China so that the alliance between China and North Korea falls apart.”

He added, “If we conclude an FTA with China, there will be a fair reason to call the North Korea-China alliance invalid.”
