Illicit Trade between North Korea and China

In the afternoon of the 25th, small-scale illicit trading was observed near the Yalu River.

In the districts near the Chinese and North Korean border, smuggling is a common act where traders cross the Yalu River to the towns of Euiju, Pyongan province.

Seafood from the Dong River, commodities such as scraps of iron, bronze, gold, foreign cigarettes and even dollars are retrieved from inland districts of the Yalu and Tumen River and transported to China. From China, household goods such as rice, Chinese noodles, (South) Korean VCD’s, cosmetics and lingerie are exported to North Korea.

This kind of small scale smuggling plays a vital role for illegal traders in the nearby districts of China, who collect the goods sent to China for distribution.

Traders use this approach as it takes time and money to pass through customs, and also because illegal goods are regulated. One Chinese tradesman said “People are becoming lawbreakers as the country’s public office is not doing its job”
