The North Korean authorities are passing the cost of construction for mushroom factories onto the people, an inside source has revealed. One of Kim Jong Eun¡¯s personal projects, the factories are under construction in order to ¡°improve the lives of the people.¡±
The source from North Korea¡¯s Yangkang Province told Daily NK over the weekend, ¡°The authorities are saying that mushroom factories are being constructed to improve our lives, but the authorities are burdening the people in order to cover the insufficient construction funds. Some are openly expressing their dissatisfaction, saying, ¡®Please just stop trying to deceive us by saying that it is for our sake.¡¯¡±
¡°People were mobilized throughout the summer in the construction of a mushroom factory near Komsan-ri in Hyesan, but the cooler weather has put a stop to construction. Now the heads of the People¡¯s Units have gone to the extreme measure of requesting the necessary funds,¡± the source explained.
¡°The issue was raised at a People¡¯s Unit meeting a few days ago, and diverse opinions were expressed on the matter,¡± it was added. ¡°Some said, ¡®Ask the cadres to front the money; they are the ones who will eat the mushrooms.¡¯ Others responded, ¡®If we don¡¯t give we won¡¯t be able to eat any.¡¯¡±
The source went on, ¡°Each household has to give 6000 won. Those families that worry where their next meal is coming from are saying, ¡®Our family will starve. When do we have time to worry about the concerns of mushroom-eaters?¡¯ This kind of strong opposition is embarrassing and awkward for the heads of the People¡¯s Units.¡±
A second source located in Musan, North Hamkyung Province said, ¡°In Musan, too, construction of a mushroom factory is underway as part of the Party¡¯s policy to improve the people¡¯s lives. People¡¯s Units, the Women¡¯s Unions and even school pupils have been mobilized out to the construction site in the afternoons.¡±
¡°The weather is cold now, so work on the factory interior is being carried out. Materials for this task are scarce and people have been burdened with fronting the cost. Some are very unhappy, saying ¡®There was a mushroom factory before, and I don¡¯t ever remember eating one,¡¯ and ¡®If any mushrooms are produced they will go to the cadres. For ordinary people that kind of thing is unimaginable,¡¯¡± the source added.
Finally, it was conveyed that, ¡°People have been under real strain due to the surveillance and crackdowns on foreign media content. Upon being tasked with preparing funds for the construction of a mushroom factory, people were livid. For those families who can¡¯t even make kimchi, 6000 won is a huge amount of money. As a result some poorer households have not been attending their People¡¯s Unit meetings.¡±
