NK Abduction Issue, Nonpartisan Cooperation Demanded, but the Ruling Party “More Examination Needed”

[imText1]The ruling party and the opposition parties showed delicately different reactions to the ‘Public Answers to Questions’ that Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea (Representative: Choi Sung Ryong) asked to search for resolutions for this particular issue.

During a phone interview with the DailyNK, Roh Ung Rae, the Press Secretary of the Uri Party, stated that, “The fundamental position of the government and the ruling party is that though it is a matter against North Korea, a great deal of effort should be given to try to solve it,” adding, “I am expecting good results since the government began to publicly mention the abduction issue.”

Press Secretary Roh said, “We did not examine the questions as of yet, but we will try to solve the problem.” He added, “More examination is needed to see if establishing a nonpartisan cooperation organization is proper for the abduction issue.”

Family Assembly Abducted to North Korea has asked through the ‘Public Answers to Questions’ whether or not the government is inclined to solve the issue by establishing an ‘Abduction Special Law Committee for the Abducted to North Korea'(a tentative name). It is questionable whether this will be carried through with nonpartisan cooperation, and by not using the abduction issue politically.

Lee Jeong Hyun, the Vice Press Secretary of the National Grand Party, stated, “We did not examine all the questions. However, our basic stance is that we will do our best to repatriate the abducted people to North Korea;” adding, “The National Grand Party has shown its clear position that the abduction issue is a prioritized agenda to be solved.”

Vice Press Secretary Lee stated, “If nonpartisan cooperation is needed, we will start discussion actively in the National Assembly,” and we the party will positively examine the questions that the families have asked and cooperate with them within the party.”

Park Yong Jin, the Press Secretary of Democratic Labor Party said, “If the abduction families suggest it, it is reasonable to actively cooperate with them.” Kwon Young Gil, a member of the National Assembly, also included, “We have expressed our positive will to solve the abduction issue.”
