Saenuri Party Pushing Point on Defectors

Saenuri Party floor leader Hwang Woo Yea is expected to send a correspondence to President Hu Jintao of China requesting humanitarian treatment of North Korean defectors faced with forced repatriation, following the lead of interim party head Park Geun Hye.

Saenuri Party lawmaker Ku Sang Chan told a party meeting this morning, “We have been in contact with the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and are preparing to send a statement outlining the concerns of Saenuri Party lawmakers to Director Wang Jiarui this week”

Hwang himself told Daily NK by phone, “Chairman Park Geun Hye has conveyed the opinion of the people, and now I expect to send a letter putting forward the people’s feelings once again. I will impress upon them that the forced repatriation of North Korean defectors runs contrary to human rights, and ask them to discuss closely with South Korea every time something like this occurs.”

Ku added that a letter Park sent to President Hu on the 16th of last month has been received and passed on to “China’s supreme leader,” but that there has been no response to date from Beijing.

Ku revealed also that the CPC International Department had expressed discomfort at the contact from the Saenuri Party, saying, “Emotional disputes between the two countries will not help either side. There are also many problems with South Korean media reports.”
