South Korea Declares ‘Emergency Alert’

An emergency meeting was called and held under the chairmanship of President Lee today following news of Kim Jong Il’s death.

Immediately after hearing news of Kim Jong Il’s death from Chun Young Woo Presidential Secretary for Foreign Affairs and National Security, President Lee called the an emergency meeting to discuss measures and actions to deal with issues surrounding Kim’s death.

The meeting included Prime Minister Kim Hwang Shik, Kim Sung Hwan (Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade), Ryu Woo Ik (Minister of Unification), Meng Hyung Kyu (Minister of Public Administration and Security), Won Si Hoon (Director of National Intelligence Service) and Ha Keum Yul (Chief of Staff).

President Lee has canceled all upcoming scheduled event this afternoon and declared an ’emergency duty alert’ for relevant civil servants.
