Kim Jong Il Heads for Russia

Kim Jong Il today left North Korea on a visit to the Russian Far East.

Kim’s special armored train arrived in Khasan Station on the Russia-North Korea frontier at around 10AM (Korean time), somewhat later than anticipated, according to South Korean government sources. He was apparently greeted by a delegation from the Primorsky Krai regional government.

The suggestion is that Kim may travel north to Vladivostok, but there has been no confirmation of any aspect of his itinerary to date, with the exception of Chosun Central News Agency, which reported with unusual punctuality, “The visit includes a meeting between the top leaders of the two countries.” The report did not include any details.
