UN NK Human Rights Resolution to be voted on Thursday

[imText1]The Daily NK obtained a draft of “North Korean Human Rights Resolution,” which is scheduled be voted on Thursday at the 61st session of the UN General Assembly.

The draft of resolution criticizes ongoing systematic and widespread human rights violation in North Korea and the country’s refusal to recognize mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur.

It is pointed out that widespread human rights violation includes torture, public execution, arbitrary imprisonment, forced labor and concentration camps.

Also noted are persecution on freedom of ideology, conscience, religion, expression, assembly and organization.

Abduction of foreigners is another serious concern the document expressed.
The resolution strongly urges the North Korean government to allow residence of international aid organizations to prevent further children malnutrition and to accept free entry of the Human Rights Special Rapporteur.

It concludes by recommending the UN Secretary General to investigate human rights situation in North Korea and to report the information at the 62nd session of the UNGA. If the resolution is approved by the General Assembly, which is most likely to happen, next UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, a South Korea, must submit the report.

The NGO that gave the draft to the Daily NK was lobbying the UN ambassadors and pushing for the resolution’s ratification.
