South Suggests Talks to Regularize Reunions

South Korea has suggested to the North that working-level contact takes place between Red Cross delegations on March 12th at Panmunjom, the Ministry of Unification announced today.

“The suggestion made from our side hopes to see regular separated family reunions to alleviate the pain of separation as soon as possible for the elderly divided families, and is a follow-up measure from the president’s address on March 1st [Independence Movement Day],” unification ministry spokesperson Park Soo Jin told press.

It is hoped that the proposed working-level contact will mark the first step toward solving the issue of separated families, and will result in a decision to host reunions on a routine basis.

Meanwhile, President Park declared at a cabinet meeting on the 4th that cooperation must occur between North and South to ensure the exchange of letters, reunions via video link and confirmation of the fate of relatives separated during the Korean War.
