Ban Welcomes Kaesong and Reunions News

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon has welcomed the successful conclusion of recent talks on both the Kaesong Industrial Complex and separated family reunions.

Speaking with reporters in Seoul, Ban explained his joy at the outcome of the talks, which saw the Kaesong Industrial Complex start down the road to normalization, and the two Koreas cement plans for a round of separated family reunions in late September.

He also said that he remains as willing as ever to visit North Korea in order to further efforts toward peace, noting, “I have repeatedly expressed my stance that I am ready to take on whatever role it takes as U.N. Secretary-General to promote positive progress in inter-Korean relations.”

“I will seek proper opportunities to discuss with the North Korean authorities and the South Korean government and review the matter of my visit to the North,” he added.

Ban also revealed that the UN is currently reviewing how it may be able to assist the government of President Park Geun Hye in its attempts to establish a “peace park” within the DMZ.
