Chairman Hwang Jang Yop of the North Korea Democratization Coalition took the lead in criticizing DJ’s July visit to North Korea.
During an interview held on the 27th with Free NK Radio, a radio broadcast founded and operated by North Korean defectors, Chairman Hwang explained, “I could understand his first visit, because he did not yet know about the reality of North Korea. Yet after hearing about his 2nd visit, I realized that [DJ] is an impudent person, who has a natural talent for deceiving people.”
Hwang points out, “I feel sorry that South Koreans have not recognized the true DJ yet.” He continued, “At least we defectors must not be deceived by his sophistry.”
Chairman Hwang denounced, “DJ is claiming that we must cooperate with Kim Jong Il because of our ethnic ties and considers Kim Jong Il, the very criminal who made North Korea a land of starvation, famine, and abusive human rights, a representative for North Koreans.” Moreover, Hwang added, “It is right to see a person who cooperates and collaborates with an international criminal organization, as one of them.”
Subsequently, Hwang said that, “[DJ] instills an illusion about Kim Jong Il in South Koreans, assuring them that Kim Jong Il guarantees peace and will not cause any war.” Additionally, Hwang stated, “I cannot but assume his [DJ’s] position is that it is right to assist Kim Jong Il and estrange the U.S.”
Chairman Hwang Jang Yop also criticized the Sunshine Policy developed under DJ’s influence.
His Ability to Turn a Mistake into an Achievement, Better than Kim Jong Il
Hwang asked, “As DJ said, the Sunshine Policy made Kim Jong Il open himself up, but what has changed? Kim Jong Il continues to be a Chairman of the National Defense Committee; he continues to reinforce his military and to produce more nuclear weapons.”
Hwang also indicated that, “Kim Jong Il has ignored the reformation and liberalization suggested by the Chinese government for the past 25 years.” He asked, “How can DJ persuade him [Kim Jong Il] to accept the reformation and liberalization plan? Kim Jong Il will not even accept the suggestions of his closest ally.”
Plus, Chairman Hwang emphasized, “It is just deceptive [for DJ] to assert that the impossible is possible, and that if [North Korea] has changed at all, that it is a result of his Sunshine Policy.”
He added, “It is true that in the past South Koreans were afraid of even one gun being fired in the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), yet now they are unmoved even by the declaration that North Korea has nuclear weapons… This is not DJ’s achievement. But, DJ has an unparalleled ability to transform his mistakes and errors into great accomplishments.”
In the end, Hwang explained, “Kim Jong Il has a natural talent for deceiving people, but DJ exceeds his abilities… He won the most authoritative Nobel Peace Prize by making use of the most notorious person in the world. Who has greater talent than that?”
