Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI) held a press conference entitled “The Outlook of the South Korean Economy in 2009” on the 27th, stating the somewhat obvious, that, “If the threats continue to worsen, the Kaesong Complex will be affected negatively.” <\/p>\n
According to SERI, the Kaesong Industrial Complex\u2019 future is very dark due to the series of hard-line measures taken by the North Korean authorities against the South, such as their restriction of the comings and goings from the Kaesong Industrial Complex and the interruption of overland passage through the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). <\/p>\n
Dong Yong Seung, the Economic Security Team Chief at SERI, emphasized, “The concern that North Korea would use the Kaesong Project as a political card has become reality. This will pose a problem for the future progress of the Kaesong Complex.”<\/p>\n
Chief Dong said, “North Korea makes approximately one hundred million dollars from Mt. Geumgang Tours and the Kaesong Complex every year. This may be a huge sum of money relative to the entire North Korean economy, but it may not be such a large amount politically.”<\/p>\n
He pointed out, “When the North takes such measures, the future investment environment in the country, especially as it pertains to South Korean companies going in, will be impacted quite negatively. A possible decrease in the number of companies trying to invest in the North will damage the North Korean economy.”<\/p>\n
He added, “If the Kaesong Complex shuts down, the direct economic effect on South Korea will be slight. However, the economic effect stemming from an unstable symbolic and political security environment will not be insignificant.”<\/p>\n
SERI used the event to release the “Korean Peninsula Security Index (KPSI) Results\u201d for the fourth quarter of this year, which recorded an index of 45.84, a 0.54 decrease from the third quarter. With 50 points as the standard, anything above is an improvement and vice versa.<\/p>\n
KPSI has carried out the KPSI, a survey of 40 experts on the Korean peninsula in the U.S., Japan, China, Russia and South Korean since 2005 in order to conduct an objective evaluation of the security situation on the peninsula.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
