Padded coats inspired by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s recent attire have begun appearing in North Korean markets. The garment could become this winter’s must-have fashion item, reminiscent of how Kim Jong Il’s overcoat once sparked a nationwide trend.<\/p>\n
“‘The Marshal’s coat’ has already hit the markets. These coats closely match the color and design of the winter coat the Marshal wore during the New Year’s event,” a South Pyongan province source told Daily NK recently.<\/p>\n
Clothing manufacturers believe “the Marshal’s coat” will resonate with North Koreans due to its understated elegance. Unlike typical padded jackets, it follows an overcoat design that’s less bulky. Its classic styling is expected to particularly appeal to professional men.<\/p>\n
Quick to spot a potential trend, fashion-savvy producers began replicating Kim’s recently worn padded coat. Initial production has been limited to test market interest, with coats priced at $150.<\/p>\n
Producers are distributing samples to major markets nationwide to gauge interest beyond Pyongsong. The city, home to most of North Korea’s sewing factories, serves as a wholesale hub where merchants from across the country conduct business. New designs from Pyongsong often become nationwide trends once they reach other markets.<\/p>\n
However, initial reception has been lukewarm. The high price point has deterred many during these economically challenging times. Additionally, the coat’s design appears unremarkable until customers learn of its connection to Kim.<\/p>\n
Still, producers remain optimistic that sales will surge once word spreads about the Marshal’s coat. They recall the profitable boom when Kim Jong Il’s winter overcoat became a sensation in the 1990s. That coat, nicknamed “the department head’s coat” to suggest its association with senior officials, was also known as “the General’s coat” after Kim Jong Il, who carried the title “the General.” It became so popular that it seemed every North Korean man owned one at some point.<\/p>\n
Some market watchers note that early January might be past the peak season for padded coat sales. “Peak demand usually hits in late December,” the source explained. “Though the timing seems late, if a few early adopters embrace the coat, it could trigger a ripple effect through their social circles and spark a sudden sales surge.”<\/p>\n
A Pyongsong clothing vendor in their 50s observed, “While average citizens can’t keep up with fashion trends, this year the coat will likely remain popular among the wealthy. But if it catches on, everyone will want one next year.”<\/p>\n
The vendor added, “That’s exactly what happened with ‘the department head’s coat.’ It started with the affluent before becoming ubiquitous. When I saw the Marshal wearing this coat, I immediately recognized the business potential.”<\/p>\n
Another vendor in their 40s explained their pricing strategy: “We’ve set the initial price at $150, but we’re prepared to introduce a more affordable version if sales lag. Given the economic climate, we’re uncertain about selling high-end items. We’ll monitor market response and adjust pricing to reach a broader customer base.”<\/p>\n
They added optimistically, “The north is still experiencing cold weather, so winter clothing sales can continue. There’s still time for a trend to develop.”<\/p>\n
