However, technical issues such as overheating, excessive battery consumption, and optimization problems have been experienced by some smartphones during video chats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily NK recently obtained a copy of Daehwawon, a comprehensive video call app subscribers to North Korea\u2019s 4G networks can use on their smartphones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The app\u2019s instructions describe the service as a \u201creal-time chatting program that allows 4G subscribers to engage in video calls or exchange pictures.\u201d This being the case, the app presumably allows users to not only make video calls but also trade photographs.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62034\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62034\" style=\"width: 741px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-62034\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"741\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat.jpg 741w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instructions for the video call app Daehwawon (Daily NK)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, the app\u2019s instructions say that mobile network subscribers \u201cmust first subscribe to a 4G data network through Kangsong NET\u201d to use Daehwawon, and that \u201cdevices with two SIM cards should set their data connection and short messaging services to Kangsong NET and their access point to KS.H.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means Daehwawon is an app for 4G subscribers of Kangsong NET, one of North Korea\u2019s leading mobile network providers. Subscribers of Koryolink appear to use another app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daehwawon\u2019s instructions teach users how to subscribe to the app, telling them to \u201cselect the network they receive service from and enter the verification code sent within two minutes by the mobile network user verification program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The instructions also tell users how to send photos. \u201cEnter the address or phone number to which you are sending the photo, press the \u2018send photo\u2019 button\u2019 and press the \u2018attach\u2019 button, after which the \u2018photo\u2019 and \u2018take photo\u2019 buttons will appear,\u201d it says. \u201cYou can send an existing photo by pressing the \u2018photo\u2019 button or take a photo to send by pressing the \u2018take photo\u2019 button.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the instructions say that users cannot resend downloaded photos. Presumably, this means photos one receives cannot be sent to another person. Smartphone filtering programs seem to block users from resending pictures they receive from other users to prevent the distribution and spread of information.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62035\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62035\" style=\"width: 741px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-62035\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"741\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_2.jpg 741w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_2-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_2-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from North Korean video call app \u201cDaehwawon\u201d (Daily NK)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Daehwawon app appears to have technical issues, including overheating, battery usage and optimization problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The instructions say that while users must subscribe to a 4G network to use the video chat service, \u201csubscribers who use devices with less than 2 gigabytes of RAM such as the Pyongyang 2431 photo should not use the video call service because the phone could overheat and shut off for no reason because video calls require heavy battery usage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The video calling app requires significant processing power, causing lower-end smartphones to overheat and drain their batteries quickly. This appears to be due to either the app&#8217;s high resource demands or inefficient programming, making it impractical to use on basic smartphone models.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62036\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62036\" style=\"width: 741px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-62036\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"741\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_3.jpg 741w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_3-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/20241125_mdh_videochat_3-696x464.jpg 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62036\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot from North Korean video call app \u201cDaehwawon\u201d (Daily NK)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another page of the instructions says that users \u201cmust add Daewonwon to their system management, program management and automatic run lists, and system management and program protection lists.\u201d For the Pyongyang 2428 and 2429 phones, \u201cusers must add the app to the system management, acceleration, preferences and protection lists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This suggests users must change their program settings because the Daehwawon app may not function properly if other apps push it down the resource priority list. The instruction could also be aimed at preventing the app from clashing with Red Flag, a filtering and monitoring app that runs on North Korean smartphones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Daily NK works with a network of sources in North Korea, China, and elsewhere.
