Korean tech researchers arrested for watching foreign media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight employees of Pyongyang\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kwangbok Cutting-Edge Product Development and Exchange Company<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were arrested by the domestic counterespionage bureau of the Ministry of State Security in late July, Daily NK has learned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking anonymously, a source in Pyongyang told Daily NK recently that the researchers were arrested on July 28, and their family members, including parents and siblings, were\u00a0 taken away in early August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source said a local official with the Ministry of State Security shared that the employees had gathered to watch forbidden videos and read forbidden books from overseas while staying late in the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another state security official told the source that the researchers were caught making slanderous insinuations about the bloodline of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after watching foreign videos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to rumors, the arrests came after the researchers were overheard by other staff whispering about Kim Jong Un being the child of a Korean-Japanese woman and wondering which of Kim Jong Il&#8217;s concubines had given birth to him. These rumors are being strictly clamped down on by the company management, the source said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The basic role of the company is to interact with the outside world, and this task is becoming more important as technological cooperation with the international community has increased in recent years. However, the Ministry of State Security didn&#8217;t hesitate to make the arrests because of alleged ideological problems&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Because the researchers&#8217; work often involved contact with the outside world, they were accused of leaking state secrets or engaging in anti-state activities, prompting the authorities to arrest them on the spot.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Many concerned over fallout from arrests<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Other company employees are worried about being caught up in the fallout from the arrests, which has even led to some voluntary resignations, the source said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the arrests, all employees have been carefully weighing their words and actions. No one talks openly about what happened, but everyone knows what transpired.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors of the arrested researchers &#8211; who know that both the researchers and their families have been detained &#8211; are also worried about what might happen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have never seen a whole family disappear in the middle of the night without explanation. This may be Pyongyang, but no one is safe,&#8221; said one neighbor, according to the source.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This incident is a terrifying reminder to Pyongyang citizens of how closely the state monitors and controls them,&#8221; the source said. &#8220;People say the researchers are being framed by the ministry, which forces people to confess to crimes they&#8217;ve never committed and where even dead men tell tales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-post-content tagdiv-type\">\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\"><em>Daily NK works with a network of sources in North Korea, China, and elsewhere.
