{"id":59209,"date":"2024-04-25T15:00:48","date_gmt":"2024-04-25T06:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=59209"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:09:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:09:03","slug":"why-term-day-sun-barely-used-kim-il-sung-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/why-term-day-sun-barely-used-kim-il-sung-birthday\/","title":{"rendered":"Why was the term &#8220;Day of the Sun&#8221; barely used on Kim Il Sung&#8217;s birthday?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korean media this year hardly used the term \u201cDay of the Sun,\u201d the name for the holiday marking the birthday of the country\u2019s late founder, Kim Il Sung, sparking interest as to why, with rumors about the reason circulating even among North Koreans themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, a Daily NK source in South Hamgyong Province said that in Hamhung, \u201cthere were student martial arts demonstrations and flower basket presentation ceremonies like in other years, but the term Day of the Sun was used less frequently, sparking talk among residents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In North Korea, Kim Il Sung was called \u201cthe Sun.\u201d The authorities named his Apr. 15 birthday the Day of the Sun in 1997 and have lavishly commemorated it as the nation\u2019s biggest holiday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this year, the North Korean media used the terms \u201cApr. 15\u201d and \u201cApril Holiday\u201d instead, sparking incredulity among locals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, people reportedly whispered whether Kim Jong Un had replaced Kim Il Sung as the new \u201cSun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News reports and propaganda occasionally referred to the younger Kim as the \u201cSun of Juche Korea,\u201d but many locals speculate that the current leader may have assumed the title of \u201cSun\u201d in earnest with the disappearance of the \u201cDay of the Sun,\u201d the source said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the source, a 30-something Hamhung resident said the authorities appear to be \u201cinculcating the idea that Kim Jong Un is our Sun little by little,\u201d but that people like himself were lukewarm about \u201chaving yet another Sun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another Hamhung resident in their 50s said they believed Kim Jong Un had replaced Kim Il Sung as the \u201cSun,\u201d but \u201cfew people care if he\u2019s the Sun or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople have to look up to him and call them the \u2018Sun\u2019 on their own. What use will it be as long as they force people to call him the Sun,\u201d he said. \u201cWho\u2019s going to follow a Sun who makes people tighten their belts even more when they are starving? How can you be the Sun when you provide no sunshine?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt appears they\u2019ve been preparing to call Kim Jong Un the \u2018Sun\u2019 for quite some time,\u201d the source said. \u201cIsn\u2019t the situation such that it would be normal to call Kim Jong Un the Sun, with them even creating mosaic murals of him? However, people wish he would become a leader who gives water to people dying of thirst before he becomes the Sun.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, an official from South Korea\u2019s Ministry of Unification said North Korea was intentionally replacing or erasing the use of the term Day of the Sun compared to the past and that the ministry \u201cprovisionally believes the name of the holiday has changed judging from several pieces of circumstantial evidence witnessed during Kim Il Sung\u2019s birthday this year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mainstream opinion regarding North Korea\u2019s failure to use the term Day of the Sun this year is that the authorities are trying to tamp down excessive mystification of Kim Il Sung and remove Kim Jong Un from the afterglow of his predecessors so that he could stand on his own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Translated by David Black.
