{"id":56942,"date":"2023-12-20T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=56942"},"modified":"2023-12-20T13:43:13","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T04:43:13","slug":"kimchaek-officials-slap-72-hour-ban-on-vessel-departures-after-one-ship-goes-missing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/kimchaek-officials-slap-72-hour-ban-on-vessel-departures-after-one-ship-goes-missing\/","title":{"rendered":"Kimchaek officials slap 72-hour ban on vessel departures after one ship goes missing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Security officials in Kimchaek recently inspected ships in the city\u2019s harbor after placing a 72-hour departure ban on them in the early morning of Dec. 1, Daily NK has learned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, a source in North Hamgyong Province told Daily NK on Wednesday that in the early hours of Dec. 1, the Kimchaek branch of the Ministry of State Security \u201cslapped a temporary, 72-hour departure ban on all vessels in Kimchaek harbor, including fishing boats and vessels attached to government and enterprise-affiliated side operations, and told them prepare for inspections after [the authorities] lost communication with a fishing boat that went to sea on Nov. 29.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accordingly, all vessels turned in their departure certificates to the city branch of the Ministry of State Security or the ministry\u2019s harbor division and underwent inspections by security officials while docked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kimchaek security officials inspected not only the boats but all crew members as well, telling boat crews to bring their mobile phones registered under their names.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe ministry&#8217;s municipal branch believes it\u2019s possible the incommunicado fishing boat didn\u2019t meet with an accident but fled to South Korea or Japan,\u201d the source said. \u201cSo, they told crews to bring their mobile phones to see if anyone was in contact with the boat crew that disappeared and to investigate those who were.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, members of other boat crews believe it unlikely that the missing boat defected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe eight people on the incommunicado boat weren&#8217;t all people who would run away,\u201d some claimed. \u201cThey didn\u2019t know each other for long. Four were regulars, and four were new, so they clearly met with an accident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In fact, some boat crews condemned the behavior of the security officials. \u201cRashly suspecting boats of fleeing if they lose communication is causing discontent,\u201d some of them said, adding: \u201cThey\u2019ve banned all boats from leaving the harbor and stopped us from working, even though they know nothing for certain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The source further reported that \u201cnothing has been heard from the incommunicado boat for some time. The crew&#8217;s families are anxiously awaiting their safe return, coming to the pier daily to weep and wail.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Translated by David Black.
