{"id":55003,"date":"2023-05-12T08:31:37","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T23:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/?p=55003"},"modified":"2026-04-05T15:53:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T06:53:12","slug":"kcna-first-planting-rice-of-year-starts-wonhwa-collective-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/kcna-first-planting-rice-of-year-starts-wonhwa-collective-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"KCNA: First planting of rice for the year starts at Wonhwa Collective Farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first rice planting of the year in North Korea took place on May 10 at the Wonhwa Collective Farm in Pyongwon, South Pyongan Province, DPRK state media <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kcnawatch.org\/newstream\/1683797875-776703550\/rice-transplanting-starts-in-wonhwa-ri-of-phyongwon-county-in-dprk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yesterday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ju Chol Gyu, vice premier and chairman of the DPRK Agriculture Commission, along with the chief secretary of the South Pyongan Provincial Party Committee Kim Tu-Il and other party officials reportedly attended the event and even participated in the first seeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonhwa Farm was dubbed the &#8220;Land of Glory&#8221; after the DPRK&#8217;s first leader Kim Il Sung personally visited the land during the Korean War in 1952 to plant rice together with farmers. Since then, the sowing in Wonhwa gives the signal for North Korean rice farmers to start cultivating their fields as well \u2013 usually, this happens around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/rice-planting-battle-launched-at-w\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May 10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Rodong Sinmun<\/i><\/b><b>: \u201cFarming is a national struggle\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea has given top priority to grain cultivation this year. With the start of the 2023 agriculture season, state media outlets have called on enterprises, party members, scientists and workers alike \u201cto give strength\u201d to the farmers who have \u201cguarded the frontline of the socialist economic construction,\u201d and to open a \u201cvigorous new upswing phase of national development\u201d by volunteering on the farm fields. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodong Sinmun<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/kcnawatch.org\/newstream\/1683752794-302874255\/%ec%98%a8-%eb%82%98%eb%9d%bc%ea%b0%80-%eb%96%a8%ec%b3%90%eb%82%98-%eb%86%8d%ec%b4%8c%ec%a7%80%ec%9b%90%ec%97%b4%ed%92%8d%ec%9d%84-%eb%8d%94%ec%9a%b1-%ea%b3%a0%ec%a1%b0%ec%8b%9c%ed%82%a4%ec%9e%90\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on May 11: Everyone in the nation should \u201cboil with fever for farming and rural support\u201d and \u201cmobilize all human and material resources for projects to minimize damage from catastrophic weather such as drought, floodwater and heavy rain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRice planting is the most labor-intensive farming business, and the rice planting season is a critical period that determines the agricultural performance of the year,\u201d the outlet continued, adding: \u201cToday&#8217;s struggle for good farming is a national struggle. Everyone regards farming as a serious issue related to their destiny and national development, and must be consciously, actively, and responsibly mobilized for rural support projects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newspaper also called on party officials to exert a \u201cpowerful ideological and offensive force that has a revolutionary influence\u201d on agricultural workers, saying: \u201cIt is necessary to actively urge them to lead the masses with a practical example while shouting the command &#8216;Follow me forward!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea usually begins sowing rice nationwide in early to mid-May and completes the planting in early to mid-June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Severe drought could have a devastating effect on the 2023 rice season<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following a poor harvest in 2022<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, food supplies in the DPRK are now running dangerously low, forcing the regime to cut food rations for the military and import large quantities of rice from China. The country is also facing its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailynk.com\/english\/voa-north-korea-experiencing-worst-spring-drought-years\/\">worst spring drought<\/a> in years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At \u201chistoric\u201d plenary sessions of the party&#8217;s Central Committee in early April, the agriculture crisis, measures to combat the drought as well as the rural development project were the main topics of discussion, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rodong.rep.kp\/en\/index.php?MTJAMjAyMy0wNC0wNi1IMDA2QDNANkBAMEA2OQ==\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodong Sinmun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
